Bronze & Copper Alloy Flange Applications
Why bronze, gunmetal and aluminium bronze flanges are selected across marine, offshore, process, water, pump and valve, and general engineering applications.
The grades listed against each industry are those commonly considered; they are not a recommendation for a particular system. Final selection depends on medium, temperature, pressure, flow velocity, regulations and the project specification. Values vary according to applicable specification, material condition and customer requirements.
Marine
Bronze and aluminium-bronze alloys have a long record in seawater-exposed hardware. Nickel aluminium bronze C95800 is the usual choice for flowing seawater; gunmetal and tin bronzes suit less severe, lower-velocity duties and mate well with bronze valves and pumps.

Shipbuilding
Ballast, cooling, fire-main and bilge systems carry seawater and are regularly dismantled. Rotating lap-joint and loose flanges ease bolt-hole alignment, and bronze flanges avoid galvanic mismatch with bronze valve and pump bodies. Classification and yard requirements are project specific and are reviewed at enquiry.

Offshore
Seawater lift, fire-water and utility systems on platforms and skids are typical uses. Nickel aluminium bronze is selected for its resistance to seawater erosion-corrosion; project piping classes decide which materials are permitted.

Oil & Gas
Copper alloys appear on seawater, cooling-water and utility lines at production and terminal facilities, and in equipment where non-ferrous materials are specified. Hydrocarbon process lines follow the project piping class; bronze flanges are supplied only where the specification calls for them.

Petrochemical
Utility, cooling-water and firewater services around petrochemical plant, and non-ferrous items called up by the piping class. Selection follows the process medium and the plant specification.

Chemical Processing
Copper alloys resist many non-oxidising media but are attacked by ammonia, strong oxidising acids and some other chemicals, so the flange grade must be matched to the process chemistry. Where it does suit, aluminium bronzes offer strength together with corrosion resistance.

Power Generation
Cooling-water circuits, auxiliary systems and seawater services at coastal plants use bronze and aluminium-bronze components. Matching the flange alloy to bronze pumps and valves keeps the galvanic picture simple.

Water Treatment
Gunmetal and bronze have a long service record in water systems. Because several of these alloys contain lead, any potable-water application must be checked against the lead-content rules of the destination market.

Desalination
Seawater intake, feed and brine lines are a typical use for nickel aluminium bronze. Final material selection depends on plant design, temperature and the plant specification, which may also call for other alloys.

Pumps & Valves
Bronze flanges mate naturally with bronze and gunmetal pump casings and valve bodies, avoiding dissimilar-metal issues. Good machinability supports accurate faces and threads on suction, discharge and valve-end flanges.

HVAC
Chilled-water, condenser-water and plant-room pipework use bronze valves and fittings. Threaded and plate flanges in gunmetal or bronze suit these systems, where the flange material is matched to the valves.

| Commonly considered grades | UNS C83600 · UNS C84400 |
Industrial Piping
General water, oil and utility piping use bronze flanges where corrosion resistance, non-sparking or non-magnetic properties, or compatibility with bronze valves is wanted. Threaded flanges avoid hot work; slip-on and plate flanges suit welded or brazed assemblies.

General Engineering
Machinery builders, fabricators and maintenance teams specify copper-alloy flanges for machinability, wear behaviour or non-magnetic properties. Custom drilling and bores are common in this segment.

|---|---|
| Commonly considered grades | UNS C93200 · UNS C84400 · UNS C63000 |
Mining
Pumping and water-handling systems in mines expose components to abrasion and sometimes aggressive water. Aluminium bronzes are considered for their combination of strength and wear resistance; mine-water chemistry should be reviewed against the grade.

| Commonly considered grades | UNS C95400 · UNS C95500 |
Infrastructure
Water supply, pumping stations and civil installations where copper-alloy valves and fittings are specified use matching flanges. Project specifications set the permissible grades.

| Commonly considered grades | UNS C83600 · UNS C84400 |
OEM Equipment
Equipment builders need flanges that match their own drawings, with repeatable dimensions and documentation. Custom drilling, thickness and bore are made to drawing for batch supply.
